Spotlight newsletter | World Water Day 2022
A special issue on pressing research topics emerging out of the Hub
30 March 2022
Every year, World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe water. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The theme for 2022 is "Groundwater: making the invisible visible". Despite its status as one of our most precious resources, lying just out of sight below our feet, there is inadequate understanding about groundwater. This subsurface resource provides critical freshwater for more than 2 billion people, and stores an estimated 90% of the earth’s non-frozen freshwater. Around 50% of all drinking water needs are met with groundwater. It is a vital resource for our water and food security, but little governance exists globally to manage and protect groundwater.
At the Hub, we are researching how to protect and preserve this precious resource - read more about our ongoing work, key lessons from the latest IPCC report, and our reflections for this World Water Day.
